Sales of the iPhone are believed to be in the region of 100,000 during the first weekend of trading in the UK.

iPhone sells 100k in first weekend

The Mirror reported that iPhones were selling at “a rate of 4.2 per second at the height of the frenzy at 1,300 outlets”. Their Sunday issue stated there were “as many as 70,000″ sales across all the retailers selling the mobile - O2, Apple and Carphone Warehouse stores. Other reports claim the number is closer to 100,000.

Peter Erskine, CEO, O2 said “it has been the fastest-selling device we have ever seen and has sold in the tens of thousands.”

Despite the large volume of sales, things got off to a bumpy start at The Carphone Warehouse, where its stores wouldn’t accept credit card payments. Sales finally began when cash was accepted rather than the compulsary card payments.
