Blogging from iPhone using Wordpress

by neil on October 31, 2008

I’ve just made myself a coffee and croissant and decided this would be a good time to do a quick review of the Wordpress App for iPhone, from my iPhone.

To avoid confusion I’ll refer to Wordpress for iPhone as ‘Wordpress App’ and your hosted Wordpress as simply ‘Wordpress’ for the remainder of this post.

Set-up

Once you’ve downloaded Wordpress App from the App Store, it takes about 1 minute to connect to your Wordpress install. Just add your website URL, Wordpress Login and Password and your ready to start. Note that your Wordpress install will need to be 2.5.1 or higher.

Adding a new post

Add text - entry is easy, as you’d expect. A little slow in portrait mode as the keyboard is so small but not bad. It would be nice if you had the option to add text in landscape - perhaps in a future version Worpress App will use the accelerometer and the landscape keyboard - but for portrait will do.

Just be careful when you’ve added text to press DONE not SAVE as you’ll publish the post there and then as I’ve just done.

Add photos - can be inserted into posts from your iPhone. All photos are uploaded as 640×480 and published as medium sized thumbnails. So let’s give it a go.

Ok, you’re given two options for adding photos: add from your camera roll or take a picture. I’ve just taken a picture of my coffee (which is now lukewarm due to the speed of my typing) and croissant and added to the post and saved. Bingo - the photo is added to the bottom of the post, as promised.

Add HTML - can you add HTML tags? Let’s try. I’ve just added some H3 tags to my subheadings to make them stand out. Let’s save and see what happens. Sweet, it works.

Realistically, you’d have to be really keen to add lots of HTML from the iPhone when in practice you’d probably tidy-up the post later at your desktop in seconds - something I’ll be doing with this post later. But, you can add HTML tags if you chose to.

Editing an existing post

Wordpress App lets you view and edit your last ten posts. When you open an existing post you get to edit the HTML associated with images and links. Handy, if you need to fix anything quickly while you’re on the go. The actual process of edting the post is the same as the above.

Conclusion

I loved using Wordpress App for iPhone Version 1.1. It’s simple to set-up and easy to create posts with text and photos while you’re on the move. The Wordpress App icon now resides alongside my other favourite iPhone Apps.

Update: The uploaded picture has been moved and resized at my desktop afterwards. The picture would otherwise have been here at the bottom of the page.
